five Steps to a Successful Hair Transplant

Hair transplantation surgery is more popular than ever, but with all the different advertisements for hair transplants out there, it can be easy to forget that the procedure is actually much more complicated than people think. At The Griffin Center of Hair Restoration and Research, our experienced team has been performing hair transplantation surgery on men and women from all over the world for forty years.

Our expert hair restoration surgeons Dr. Edmond Griffin and Dr. Ashley Curtis understand the level of care and attention to detail that is required at each and every stage of the process. In an effort to help patients understand the various steps that are necessary for a truly successful hair transplantation procedure, we have put together a brief breakdown of The Griffin Center process.

There are many different forms of hair loss and many different medical conditions that can affect their treatment, so each patient needs to be evaluated carefully in order to determine the medications or procedures that will best serve their specific, individual needs.

No matter if the healthy hair follicles for transplantation are removed all at once with follicular unit grafting (commonly known as the strip method) or one at a time using follicular unit extraction (FUE) techniques, tremendous care must be taken to preserve the integrity of the grafts. If they are damaged during the removal process, grafts will fail to thrive in their new locations.

Once the donor follicles are removed, they must be carefully dissected and sorted under a powerful binocular microscope. Hair follicles naturally grow in clusters of one, two, three, or even four follicles, and while some doctors may chop up these follicular unit groups so they can boast higher numbers, keeping them intact improves survivability and allows for more natural looking hair transplant results.

The real key to a truly natural looking hair transplant is in the placement and angling of the grafts. An individual’s hair growth pattern is as unique as a fingerprint and only a highly skilled and experienced surgeon can properly angle the necessary incisions and place the follicular unit grafts so that they blend seamlessly with that natural pattern.

Hair loss is usually progressive and hair transplantation only moves healthy hair follicles into thinning areas; it does not prevent further hair loss from occurring. Non-surgical hair loss treatments, including prescription medication, platelet rich plasma, or red light laser therapy, should be combined into a comprehensive, long-term maintenance plan that helps slow or prevent further hair loss and preserve your hair transplantation results.
